This is in response to your May 21 letter seeking clarification regarding whether a c e r t i f i c a t e d f l i g h t instructor (CFI) with a third class medical certificate may give flight instruction and act as pilot in command (PIC) for compensation.

Part 61, Certification Bulletin Number 81-2, discusses the need for a valid airman medical certificate and its relationship to f l i g h t i n s t r u c t o r c e r t i f i c a t e s . W h i l e the b u l l e t i n d o e s n o t s p e c i f i c a l l y a d d r e s s t h e i s s u e raised in your letter, a careful reading of this b u l l e t i n s u g g e s t s t h a t a C F I m a y r e c e i v e compensation and act as PIC during an instructional flight with only a third class medical certificate. We hope this information adequately addresses your question.
