Captain reported receiving a terrain alert from ATC but had the terrain in sight throughout the visual approach.

Report 1 | Narrative: Coming down on final approach VFR for Runway 15. Got low on the mountains. Tower advised terrain alert; you are low. We advised Tower we have the terrain and airport in sight. We continued the visual approach; landed safely. Next time I [will] stay high for mountain terrain to avoid the low terrain advisory. Since we were VFR; I got low around the mountains. I had terrain in sight. I need to be more alert of the distance and not misjudge the distance.
